The Point Source Microscope (PSM)
was originally designed to aid in the alignment of a centered optical
system whose elements included spherical lenses, toroidal lenses and
spherical mirror segments used off-axis. Alignment meant putting
the centers of curvature of all these surfaces on a common axis.
PSM Applications
-
Mechanically locate centers of
curvatures and foci of on-axis beams
-
Locates point images and shows the image shape.
-
Aids in holding the image in the correct
translational location while the asphere is adjusted to reduce the
alignment aberration to zero.
-
Measurement of paraxial lens parameters
for
debugging and reverse engineering
-
Sensitive to image shape—it
can be used for inspection of optics and the measurement of the
surface radius of curvature.
-
While not as sensitive as an interferometer, the
PSM
can see wavefront errors of a quarter wave or less.
-
For shops without access to an interferometer, this
can be useful if the quality of an optical element is questionable
or there is a concern that the mounting has distorted the optics.
-
Aligning holograms to null optics for aspheric
testing
-
Aligning machined off-axis metal mirrors for
terahertz (sub-millimeter) optical systems
-
Aligning image slicer mirror arrays
in astronomical
spectrophraphs
-
Aligning three-dimensional systems
-
Aligning off-axis and telescope systems
-
Aligning mold cavities for plastic cell phone camera
lenses
-
Aligning aspheric optics, including off-axis
aspheres.
